On February 5, 2013, the Delaware Surgery Center was notified by the American College of Surgeons that the facility was granted “Full Approval” and will be officially recognized as an “American College of Surgeons Outpatient Accredited Bariatric Center.” The nursing and administrative staff of this facility has spent countless hours of preparation and hard work to obtain this designation, and they deserve credit for a job well done.
Our first step in becoming a Center of Excellence was ensuring that bariatric equipment was available. This included upgraded operating room tables, bathroom facilities, waiting room furniture, stretchers, and instruments required for gastric band surgery. We then formed a bariatric committee to plan, organize, and track patient care through a labyrinth of studies, blood work, and expert consultations required to qualify for the procedure. The collaborative efforts of our staff, surgeons, and consulting physicians, enabled us to coordinate the process so that patient selection, data, and consultations were completed well in advance of the surgical procedure. When we combined these efforts with a zero tolerance for incomplete charts that could result in patient cancellation the day of surgery, we improved the patient experience, provided efficient delivery of health care, and produced a superior outcome.
To date, we have performed one hundred thirty-three laparoscopic gastric band procedures. Patient care is smooth and seamless at the Delaware Surgery Center, and it is our intention to continue using best-in-class health care, communication, and organization practices to better serve the community of Southern Delaware as a Center of Excellence.
